Features of Maintenance and Service for Roots Blowers

A roots blower is a machine that conveys fluids and intakes air with multiple blades called impellers, which rotate in a small clearance. The roots blower has a variety of sizes, ranging from those that can be mounted on desks to those that weigh a dozen tons. The pumping capacity is mainly determined by the size of the entire machine, the pressure, and the rotation speed of the impeller, and the fluid is pushed by a force greater than the pressure existing on the discharge side. Therefore, in order to reduce pressure loss and accomplish efficient conveyance, it is necessary to maintain a sealed structure that prevents leakage and minimize the internal clearance of the roots blower. An increase in vibration and noise, and a dropping pressure or rising temperature during operation indicate that it’s time for maintenance and service. The pumping capacity can be maintained by replacing parts that directly affect operation, such as couplings, bearings and gears, and parts that prevent leakage, such as oil seals and mechanical seals, at the right time.

For this reason, we examine repairs, considering not only the fitting of disassembled parts, but also the geometric tolerances, and conduct complex machining in cooperation with Kurashiki Boring Kiko, our group company, to accomplish high-quality repairs.

Even in situations where repairs are not sufficient, such as dynamic balance corrections necessary to rotate, without vibrations, impellers which become thinned with wear caused by conveyance fluids or foreign substances that have been caught, and fabrication of new components that have been damaged to the point where they cannot be reused, we not only extend the service life of roots blowers, but also conduct maintenance and service for roots blowers exceeding 10 tons, and repair the fitting parts without removing the shaft from the impeller, thereby minimizing the shutdown of operations while ensuring accuracy.

Assembled with properly repaired parts, the roots blower rotates smoothly without vibration, reducing noise and stabilizing and improving conveyance capacity to improve productivity. Disassembly begins by observing the clearance and condition between the impellers and the case. Roots blowers, which convey fluids at constant pressure and volume, are carefully serviced to check for wear, contact marks, and smooth impeller movement. The fitting parts of important components such as bearings and oil seals are carefully measured and repaired after analysis of the measured values and careful consideration of the effect on the clearance. If this is not possible, we fabricate new components to restore performance.

Bearings

Bearing fittings are the most important part of the operating performance of the roots blower. Their main purpose is to provide stable fluid pumping capacity through smooth rotation, and its primary function is to maintain appropriate clearance between impellers, between the impeller and the case, and between the impeller and the side cover. Abnormality of the fitting parts causes a locally rising temperature in the component. The result is usually observed as contact marks on the case and impeller, but in serious cases, it causes thinning and bending of the shaft and deformation of the bearing case. Sudden abnormalities in the bearing section can spread to the gear and case, causing contact between the parts and leading to serious damage.

Oil seals

Oil seals, which are consumables, are replaced when excessive grease is supplied or disassembly is required for some reason. If the oil seal fitting part is not smooth enough, or if there are lip marks or scratches on the shaft, this situation can be observed as an obvious grease leak, causing heat generation and seizure of the sealing bearing. We examine the most suitable repair method according to the conveyance fluid and the surface condition of the defective part, and perform the repair using the method that produces the best result.

Impellers

We observe whether there are any foreign substances that have been caught or any wear due to contact with the side plate or case, and also measure the fitting parts of the shaft. After measuring the dimensions of each part, we examine whether the appropriate clearance can be maintained, and then we can adjust the assembly for optimal performance. Depending on the type of impellers, incorporated gears, and conveyed fluids, we can conduct assembly so as to maximize its potential. Timing gears

Maintaining correct lubricity is important to prevent temperature rise of timing gears. If the gear temperature rises, the backlash and clearance between the gears cannot be properly maintained, causing impellers to collide with each other or to come into contact with the side case or case, resulting in catastrophic damage. Clearance adjustments

Properly maintained clearances ensure efficient pumping of fluid while minimizing fluid leakage through clearances and improving energy efficiency. Clearance adjustment is an important task to measure all the required clearance inside the roots blower, and adjust and set the clearance to the most appropriate clearance in each section. By considering the surrounding operating environment, the fluid to be conveyed, the fluid to be taken in, and the materials contained in the fluid, we set the optimum clearance for the machine to be serviced and make adjustments to maintain the performance.

The bearing was damaged due to insufficient oil supply, and the case for the outer ring of the bearing was seized. At the same time, the shaft was twisted and greatly reduced in size. The impellers could not rotate due to cracks and locking caused by contact between the impellers.

We fabricated a new bearing case and shaft. After removing the damaged shaft from the impeller, we conducted machining and inserted the fabricated shaft. We repaired the impeller with welding for repairing casting products, and performed maintenance and service so that the impeller was able to be used again.

Fabrication of parts

Due to manufacturer discontinuation of production and organization scale-down, there are a large number of machines without expectations for after-sales service.

We fabricate components as much as possible so that failure of one part does not lead to disposal of the entire machine. With the exception of the impeller, we can fabricate most of the components. Due to poor lubrication, the bearing inner ring became hot and the shaft was burned out. We removed the shaft from the impeller, sketched the non-damaged portion, determined fitting dimensions and the shape of the labyrinth, fabricated a new shaft, fit it, and confirmed that an appropriate clearance was secured.

Bearing cases

Due to the heat generated by the outer ring of the bearing, the casting was seized and could not be reused, so a new part was fabricated. We sketched non-damaged parts used in other portions, fabricated the same part, and changed the tolerance and properties of the fitting part to prevent seizure.

Pulleys

We temporarily stopped operation and measured the pulley on-site, and fabricated a new pulley. Based on the shafts protruding from the inner diameter tapered part, including the portion where the belt is hung, we calculated the tapered part, and fabricated, painted, and delivered the pulley.

Labyrinths

We can fabricate new labyrinths that have lost their function due to wear of the grooves caused by contact. We can restore the function of even a single labyrinth, as well as an engraved shaft groove, by sketching and properly dimensioned design.
